What Happened During the Invisalign Procedure?
Our client visited a dental practice to continue her Invisalign aligner treatment, a cosmetic dental procedure that uses clear trays to straighten teeth discreetly. During a routine appointment, the dentist was using a syringe containing a highly acidic etching solution, typically used to prepare teeth surfaces for bonding.
During the procedure, the acid came into contact with the client’s left cheek, causing immediate discomfort. She informed the dentist of the pain, but no remedial action was taken at the time.
Chemical Burn and Emergency Hospital Treatment
After leaving the dental practice, our client noticed increasing redness and skin peeling on her cheek. She returned to the clinic and was seen by the manager, who applied a cooling wipe. Despite this, the injury worsened, prompting her to seek emergency hospital treatment.
At the hospital, the affected area was lavaged (washed out) and she was referred to the Plastic Surgery Department. Over the following months, she experienced hyperpigmentation of the skin—a dark discoloration that persisted for nearly 10 months.
In addition to the physical scarring, the client developed psychological symptoms, including distress and embarrassment, due to the visible facial injury.
