Children Harmed by Orthopaedic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital

A report has been published following an investigation into Yaser Jabbar, a “world-famous” orthopaedic surgeon who operated on 789 children at Great Ormond Street Hospital between 2017 and 2022. Mr Jabbar specialised in complex surgery to lengthen and reconstruct children’s limbs.

It has been reported that 94 children under his care came to harm. Of these, 36 children suffered severe harm and a further 39 experienced moderate harm. Mr Jabbar is no longer licensed to practise medicine in the UK.

Findings of the Investigation

The highly specialist and high-risk procedures carried out by Mr Jabbar involved the insertion of metal plates, bone grafts, and implants. While complications can arise even where care meets an acceptable standard and without any negligence, it is understood that the investigation found Mr Jabbar’s practice to be substandard in several respects, which had undoubtedly caused harm.

The findings of the investigation are now being reviewed by the Metropolitan Police to determine whether a further investigation should be undertaken with a view to potential prosecution.

Areas of Concern Identified

Concerns raised regarding the treatment provided by Mr Jabbar include:

  • Premature removal of bone fixation devices
  • Performance of unnecessary surgery
  • Incorrect placement of implants or prostheses
  • Technical errors during surgery
  • Failure to provide adequate advice regarding risks
  • Overreliance on junior staff
  • Failure to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of infections
  • Inadequate surgical planning
  • Poor clinical record keeping

Wider Concerns at Great Ormond Street Hospital

Concerns have also been raised about Great Ormond Street Hospital’s failure to identify problems at an earlier stage and to act sufficiently, clearly and decisively.

The BBC has reported that staff had expressed concerns about the standard of care, that there was a toxic working culture, and that inappropriate or incorrect surgery had been carried out.

The outcome of the investigation has been widely reported in the media.
