Cervical Cancer Prevention Week
This week marks Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which aims to raise awareness of cervical screening for women aged 25 to 64, as well as promote the HPV vaccination for young people aged 11 to 18.
Brilliant organisations such as The Eve Appeal and Macmillan Cancer Support do vital work in raising awareness, tackling misinformation, and supporting women who receive a diagnosis of cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is largely preventable and, while NHS England aims to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040, some women sadly continue to receive a diagnosis. Although many patients benefit from timely diagnosis and effective treatment, there are occasions where diagnosis or treatment is delayed.
Our solicitors have advised and supported women in obtaining compensation for delays in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer. These cases have included:
- Misreporting of cervical smear results
- Failure to act on abnormal smear findings
- Failure to recall women for repeat screening
Errors such as these can result in delayed diagnosis, with consequences that can be devastating for patients and their families.
It has been reported that a mother tragically died following a 15-month delay in diagnosis, after an error at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust resulted in her being incorrectly informed that her smear test result was normal. By the time she was diagnosed, the cancer had progressed to stage 4 and was incurable.
