Companies fined after worker was injured due to a fall from height
Fall from height is one of the most common type of accidents at work.
Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) report revealed another case of a construction worker falling through a roof.
On 23 January 2018, an employee of Zamperoni F.lli srl, an Italian Construction company, was working at Bifrangi UK site in Lincoln.
While refurbishing roof structure of a shed, the worker stepped backwards from metal sheeting onto a fragile roof light.
The plastic material gave under him. He sustained three broken ribs and two broken arms after falling 5.44m down to the ground.
HSE investigated the incident and found that both Zamperoni F.lli srl and Bifrangi UK did not carry out risk assessment and failed to plan all elements of the construction work.
The risk of someone falling through the fragile roof was also not sufficiently controlled.
Additionally, there was no safe access point to the roof of the shed.
Both companies overlooked their inadequate supervision and management checks.
Finally, they did not ensure safety when they failed to act on the previous occurrences of unsafe work.
Bifrangi UK of Shardlow Works, Grange Mill Lane, Sheffield were fined £140,000 and must pay £2,607 costs for breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act, Section 3(1) and Section 2(1).
Despite not being present at the court, Zamperoni F.lli srl of Via Strada Muson, 17-31011 Asolo (TV) Italy were fined £54,000, plus the £1,240 costs to pay.
Working at height is often dangerous and requires great precaution. Even though many employers should be taking extra care to ensure the safety of their employees, to reduce risks of falling, many fail to do so.
Due to the lack of protection, many workers can sustain serious injuries or even be killed.
