Employee sustained a serious injury at a tinplate printing company.
Accidents at work are not rare and can often lead to serious injuries. One such case can be noted on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.
On 19 June 2017, a Tinmasters Swansea Limited’s employee was working at Afon Works, Bryntywod, Swansea. Whilst attempting to fix a sporadic fault of the printing press, he ended up trapped between the rollers. His hand suffered a serious crushing and de-gloving injury.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the case and uncovered that the front guards electronic interlock device had been defeated. Additionally, the printing press lacked any risk assessment for finding faults and there was no safe system of work. The employees were not provided with a suitable training either.
Tinmasters Swansea Limited, (at the time of the accident the company was known as Afon Tinplate Company Limited) of Severn Bridge Industrial Estate, Caldicot, Wales pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The company was given a fine of £29,000. They will also pay costs of £1,713.40
Many injuries at work can be easily prevented when employers properly assess the risk of an injury and put forth enough control measures. The task of minimising the risk, especially when working with machinery, should be taken more seriously by employers, so that the number of accidents such as these can decrease.
Hopefully, the Tinmasters Swansea Limited have learned their lesson and will take the safety of their employees more seriously. Unfortunately, it often takes an accident for a company to improve their safety measures. A worker must first suffer for a company to realise the gravity of the situation.
