During his time at the hospital, he was the clinical lead for spinal surgery between 2005 and 2015.
Salford Spinal Surgeon John Bradley Williamson Negligence
Concerns were raised in 2014 by an anonymous whistle-blower, leading to a review by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016. Sadly, they found no concerns, only complications.
However, in 2021 further concerns were raised and an investigation was launched, headed by external experts. The report, overseen by other experienced surgeons and an independent expert, examined the care of 130 patients treated between 2009 and 2014.
An inquiry was launched in 2021, by the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) NHS Foundation Trust, which found “unaccepted and unprofessional behaviour” resulting in patients suffering serious blood loss and ongoing pain and suffering. The report found that more than 100 patients had been identified as needing checks after treatment by Mr Williamson, seven – including four deceased patients – had severe harm inflicted by Mr Williamson, and 13 faced moderate harm.
How the Salford Surgeon’s Negligence Occurred
The review of Salford Spinal Surgeon John Bradley Williamson identified poor surgical technique, record-keeping and communication with patients, the features of the failing included:
- Poor pre-operative planning
- Decisions being made that went against other medical professionals’ advice
- Lack of informed consent
- Patients experiencing blood loss that was higher than expected
- Substandard surgery due to lack of care and attention in uncomplicated surgery
The care of 23 of the patients considered by the investigation found that they had screws misplaced in their spines, five suffered blood loss, and in nine he had failed to investigate or act on post-surgery complications in a timely manner or at all. Issues of screw placement and screws being misplaced were identified in a high number of cases.
The inquiry followed an investigation by the Royal College which had been called in, in 2015, to review 10 of Mr Willimsons patients, but they found no significant concerns. This contradiction is very concerning, given the findings of the inquiry were so significant.
