£17,000 Recovered from Revolut After Business Owner Falls Victim to Sophisticated Impersonation Scam

In February 2024, a hard-working business owner and father of four became the unfortunate target of a highly sophisticated impersonation scam. What began as a routine day quickly turned into a financial nightmare, but thanks to legal intervention and a final ruling by the Financial Ombudsman Service, justice prevailed.

The Scam: Sophisticated and Convincing

The ordeal began when our client received a call from a withheld number, displayed as ‘No Caller ID’. On the line was a scammer posing as a Revolut representative. What made this scam especially dangerous was the level of detail the fraudster possessed:

  • our client’s full name,
  • home address,
  • phone number,
  • account balance,
  • and even past transaction history.

These details gave the scammer the appearance of legitimacy. Claiming to be from Revolut’s fraud team, they told our client that his account had been compromised and that a suspicious transaction had been blocked. Alarmed and concerned for his finances, our client opened his Revolut app while still on the phone and saw a pending transaction, just as the scammer described.

Thankfully, his wife, who was present during the call, immediately called the police, who advised them to hang up the call.

Lockout and Unauthorised Payments

Despite their swift response, later that night a payment of £4,971.00 was made to the Apple Store. Our client, now locked out of his online banking account, could not intervene.

Once he regained access, he discovered that four unauthorised transactions to the Apple Store had gone through, none of which he had approved. These transactions totalled £15,000, sparking immediate concern.

Revolut’s Initial Response: Denial

Despite the glaring red flags and evident breach in account security, Revolut refused to refund the stolen funds. This is, unfortunately, not uncommon in cases involving impersonation scams, even when banks fail to follow proper verification protocols.

Our client was understandably devastated and frustrated. That’s when he reached out to Phoenix Solicitors.

Legal Action and a Just Outcome

Our legal team took on the case and pursued a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman Service. We presented clear evidence that the bank had failed in its duty to protect the customer by:

  • Not verifying suspicious activity.
  • Allowing multiple large transactions to go through unchallenged.
  • Failing to detect clear warning signs of fraud.

After a thorough review, the Financial Ombudsman issued a final binding decision in favour of our client.

The Result: Full Recovery + Interest

Revolut was ordered to refund the full amount of £15,000 and an additional £2,000 in interest, bringing the total recovered to £17,000.

Final Thoughts

This case is a stark reminder of how convincing scammers have become, and how vital it is for financial institutions to protect their customers from fraud. It also highlights the importance of seeking legal advice when banks fail to uphold that duty.
