Romance Scams in the Festive Period

Romance Scams in the Festive Period

Increase in Romance Scams

Each year on the run up to Christmas, we see an increase in Romance scams. Scammers are professionals at preying upon vulnerable people and as the festive period can be a difficult time of year for those who are lonely or experiencing conflict within their family life, we often see these people turn to new connections in the hope of finding a new friend or romantic partner.

It is important to remember that, if you had been targeted in a romance scam, you are not alone. Thousands upon thousands of people fall for these scams, not only on the run up to Christmas, but all year round. Scammers are master manipulators, and it is their job to develop new ways to coerce their victims into sending over their money in the most effective way possible.

In recent news, Love Island Star, Georgia Steel, speaks of her experience of being a victim of a Romance Scam and is evidence that anyone can be targeted.

There is no question that these scams have devastating effects on victims, not only financially, but mentally. Due to this, we believe it is important to raise awareness of these scams in order for people to be well equipped to spot a romance scam.

Things to look out for this Christmas to keep yourself protected and well aware of Romance scams:

  • The sudden development of a new friendship / relationship online
  • Frequent messages / calls from your new connection (a common tactic for scammers to build a relationship of trust)
  • Scammers will often pose as people who live outside of the UK to provide a barrier of meeting in person and to keep the relationship solely online
  • Scammers will also pose as people who are financially secure to ensure that they create the illusion that if any monies were loaned to them, they are in a position to re pay this loan
  • The creation of high pressure circumstances, for example, the scammers family member being rushed into hospital and needing money for medical fees. (Scammers will often create literal life or death situations to coerce innocent and genuine victims into sending money over quickly without fully assessing the situation).
